Comparing 3D Models to 3D Scanner Data?
Some of our MEs are looking into using a laser scanning service for part inspection. The vendor they are working with provides them with an IGES file containing a sort of 3D point cloud representing the surface of the measured part. We are able to import this IGES file into Modeling as a Wireframe part. If we turn on 3D Vertices in the Show settings we can see the points, but have no easy way to compare the measured points to the original model.
I contacted CoCreate but they don't currently offer a solution. We don't know much about this topic so need to start doing some research. If anyone has experience with doing something like this, any tips or pointers would be appreciated.

Well, one option is to use SolidWorks! Their Premium level bundle includes Scan to 3D capability and support for NextEngine's low-cost scanner.

You might want to take a look at Geomagic Qualify. We use a software called Surfacer that is no longer available but Geomagic would be a possible replacement for us in the future.
We CT scan investment castings and inspect them using this process. |

Thanks to everyone who replied. Lots of interesting links but many seem to be targeted to reverse engineering or creating a solid model from the point cloud. Geomagic Qualify seems to be the most promising. It is designed specficially for inspection and comparing the measured data to the 3D model and is not tied to a specific CAD application.

The latest Desktop Engineering magazine also includes an article about this at http://www.deskeng.com/ME2/Sites/dir...555C9CA2D3F0EA
It mentions PolyWorks V10, which is point-cloud inspection and reverse engineering software. The need we were investigating was indeed for reverse-engineering/documentation at the time, but many of these tools cover both inspection and reverse-engineering. I see them as highly related. |

I understand, that it's an old topic. But it appears to be actual for me. I need to do reverse engineering for car engines using it's scanned models. If it makes sense I use Artec Spider 3d scanner with their software. I don't need to compare scanned data with cad model. I need to create a very accurate CAD model out of scanned data. So could anyone recommend which CAD soft is better for this purpose or maybe you know some good manuals?
