Step VS. Iges for external Data exchange

We are investigating the purchase of a step translation license for solid designer, and are interested in feedback to the following questions. 1.) Which format is easier to use? 2.) Do models import easier using step than iges. 3.) Can you export a multi part step assembly? WHen exporting assemblies as 3d iges files, we are losing part structure. Any input is appreciated. Thank you, Scott

re: Step VS. Iges for external Data exchange

We have had very good success using STEP, with which we are able to more reliably exchange solid models than if IGES were used. Buying the STEP translator is a worthwhile investment.

re: Step VS. Iges for external Data exchange

Scott, I have found step translations provide the highest quality models in other CAD systems. Depending on the Application Protocol (AP) that is used, assembly structure, part and assy names, and part color are generally preserved. IGES does not have this ability that I know of. One major factor to consider is the CAD systems used by your vendors or contract manufacturers. Find out the type that have provided the best results for them. I am assuming that SolidDesigner is your base product. Regarding usability, I find step easier to use. You are able to select the entire assembly where IGES does not allow assemblies at all. You must select each part indivdually in your structure browser. Importing parts is similar with both tranlators. Occasionally I have better results on parts that have NURBS surfaces with IGES. One thing to watch is your geometric resolution. SolidDesigner default is 10e-6, while many CAD systems use 10e-4 (inches). This difference may lead to short edges, especially on blends. You may change the resolution to be courser, but it is difficult to go the other way. Good Luck! Lance
