PTC takeover of CoCreate
"PTC plans to integrate CoCreate solutions with complementary PTC solutions".
Yeah right! Combining apples and oranges. Two different software kernnals... pa-leezzz! PTC bought out a competitor and will treat it as such by dismantling and kick it to the curb. PTC is a rough neck company that could care less about the users since it ONLY sells it's product to upper management. Pete |

Re: PTC takeover of CoCreate
Well, the precise quote probably would rather be: "PTC plans to integrate CoCreate solutions with the PTC Product Development System (PDS) in order to offer CoCreate customers complementary product development capabilities including engineering calculations, dynamic publishing, visualization, high-speed machining, and enterprise content and process management." See http://www.ptc.com/appserver/wcms/standards/textsub.jsp?im_dbkey=63668&icg_dbkey=21 for the press release containing this quote, and http://www.ptc.com/products/product_development_system.htm for PTC's definition of "Product Development System".
I don't have any inside information beyond what we've communicated in press releases and associated background information, so I'll just say that from studying that information, you will see that PDS encompasses much more than just modeling kernels, which means that there are a lot more opportunities for integration than that. By the way, a new press release has been issued today which announces the completion of the acquisition; see http://www.ptc.com/appserver/wcms/standards/textsub.jsp?&im_dbkey=63668&icg_dbkey=21 . You may also be interested in the following two webcasts which focus on what this acquisition means for customers:

Re: PTC takeover of CoCreate
I doubt the situation is as dire as all that, Pete.
PTC has no doubt watched the debut of SpaceClaim a few months back, and noticed that there is indeed a market segment of CAD users who don't like parametric, history-based CAD software. They bought CoCreate to compete in that market. I doubt there will be any high-level integration for a long time, if ever, but what would be awesome would be if PTC could bring the power of embedded logic and marry it with the simplicity of boolean manipulation. No CAD software today does this. Parametric, history-based tools have the problem of logic errors that have to be debugged, and history-free tools have the problem of not being able to adequately define relationships between geometric features. Re: PTC takeover of CoCreate
I wonder why Alibre was a copy of CoCreate....

Re: PTC takeover of CoCreate
Ya, very strange. Alibre is very much history-based. It's rather a copy of Pro/E. An OK system, if you like that methodology.

Re: PTC takeover of CoCreate
Nice catch... Alibre was accidentally place under the "Explicit" column. They should have been placed under "Parametric".

Re: PTC takeover of CoCreate
I just read one blogger's take on the PTC takeover:
http://cadinsider.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/01/ptc-embraces-co.html In it he says that they say: "the OneSpace name will fade away" I'm partial to going back to SolidDesigner. |

Re: PTC takeover of CoCreate
Yeah, then we can have SolidEdge, SolidWorks, and SolidDesigner.
