Working without Model Manager

Hi,

At work we use CoCreate Modelling 2008 but do not have the Model Manager. As a relatively new user I am very concerned about the duplication of data - parts within subassemblies and then within overall assemblies. And of course if you change the part then the subassy and overall assy don't change.

The only way I can see around this is to only ever work in a top level assembly, basically one pkg file for a whole machine. And of course numerous mi files for all of the drawings.

Is this the generally accepted way of working, or am I on the wrong course?

Thanks.

Re: Working without Model Manager

You can always save your data in *.sd* format. This way, each part gets its own file, and there is no duplication. Problem solved.

However, there is also the challenge of managing all those *.sd* files, and coordinating access to them. You will find that a tool like Model Manager can save huge amounts of time, hassle and money even if you work in a small group of designers.

Re: Working without Model Manager

You may want to look at this thread.....http://cocreateusers.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7166 It is an example of things that can and will go wrong when you attempt to use the same part in multiple products and you are not using any sort of data management system.

The re-use of existing parts and assemblies in new products is what Model Manager does best. It will more than pay for itself.

Re: Working without Model Manager

Thanks for the responses. I know that the company I work for desperately needs the Model Manager, but until we get it I'm trying to do the best with what I've got.

I haven't come across the sd format thus far so I'll look at that tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Re: Working without Model Manager

The .sd format happens when you save the files as 3D data or 3D Modified.

3D Data is your first save ever of your part or assembly. Then and there after, using 3D Modified to follow along with your saving of a part or assembly.

That's the way I've been instructed to do things at my site. Our company has dropped the entire PKG format all together per your original statement of "duplication of data" and various revision levels.

Out of all the CAD systems I've been on in 15+ years, this CoCreate has the wierdest method for saving and loading files. Outside of the Model Manager, you will need to play around with the aspects of saving parts various ways using methods of the 3D data and 3D Modified. From there you will even notice the -1 and higher sufix additions too.
