MSU security device going offline

I've had this happen twice now.

I get a message that the security device has changed and that all licenses are shuting down. Nothing has changed.

Seems like the only thing that will fix it is to reboot the machine. HP N-class Unix.

Could the port that the dongle connects to have gone bad?

Re: MSU security device going offline

Bill,
Is it a dongle or an MSU? The MSU's are either red or yellow and the dongles are gray.

If it's an MSU, you can move it to another machine and plug it in. Set you clients to look at that machine for it's licenses.

If all is well, then you know it's the machine, if it still happens, then it could be a bad MSU. Usually the MSU's just die, but I still wouldn't rule it out.

Gary.

Yes its a MSU(yellow).

How do you tell it to look at another machine.

Could it be a bad port on the server?

Re: MSU security device going offline

Go to "Add or Remove programs" in the control panel. Click on the product and then select "Change" and then "Modify".
When it asks for a license server, you can either change it or add another one (seperated by comas).

My guess would be that it's a bad port because a reboot fixes it and usually, the MSU just dies. But I wouldn't rule out a bad MSU either.

This is an easy test and if it doesn't fail after moving it to another machine, then you'll know that it's not the MSU.

This is an old version of WorkManager(5.11). This is a Unix machine and I have never seen a control panel associated with the product.

About the only configuration changes I make to it are modifying "me_fserv.rc" to add more vault areas.

Sorry, but I'm not old enough to help you with that one

I still believe you need to move the mels and msu to another machine for confirmation.

From the CoCreate Manager Server 2008 Administrator Guide:

Quote:
To specify which License Server(s) your servers and clients check, modify the following:

* Distributed file servers:
o PC: Indicate additional license servers with the installation program. In the License Server field, separate servers with semicolons or spaces.
o UNIX: Include additional -l license_server options when you start the servers manually or when you edit the opt/workmgr/servXXX/me_fserv.rc file.
* Clients: Add LICENSE_SERVER hostname lines to the client's passwords file.
